چکیده

A Virtual Test Facility (VTF) for studying the three-dimensional dynamic response of solid materials subject to strong shock and detonation waves has been constructed as part of the research program of the Center for Simulating the Dynamic Response of Materials at the California Institute of Technology. The compressible fluid flow is simulated with a Cartesian finite volume method and treating the solid as an embedded moving body, while a Lagrangian finite element scheme is employed to describe the structural response to the hydrodynamic pressure loading. A temporal splitting method is applied to update the position and velocity of the boundary between time steps. The boundary is represented implicitly in the fluid solver with a level set function that is constructed on-the-fly from the unstructured solid surface mesh. Block-structured mesh adaptation with time step refinement in the fluid allows for the efficient consideration of disparate fluid and solid time scales. We detail the design of the employed objectoriented mesh refinement framework AMROC and outline its effective extension for fluid-structure interaction problems. Further, we describe the parallelization of the most important algorithmic components for distributed memory machines and discuss the applied partitioning strategies. As computational examples for typical VTF applications, we present the dynamic deformation of a tantalum cylinder due to the detonation of an interior solid explosive and the impact of an explosion-induced shock wave on a multi-material soft tissue body.

Numerical Investigation of Circular Plates Deformation under Air Blast Wave

In the current research the maximum deflection of circular plates made of AA5010 and AA1100 alloys under blast load was investigated. Shock waves were produced by exploding a spherical charge in different distances from the center of plates. The ABAQUS software uses conwep equation for blast loading analysis. It was found the results of these simulations have about 30% to 40% inaccuracy in comp...

Design and Analysis of Graded Honeycomb Shock Absorber for Increasing the Safety of Passengers in Armored Vehicles Exposed to Mine Explosion

Protecting armored vehicles from mine explosion can lead to the survival of thousands of people exposed to this risk. Very purpose, shock absorbers such as honeycomb structures can be applied for crashworthiness improvement. In this study, graded honeycomb structure is primarily introduced as a shock absorber, followed by the introduction of its absorbed energy and the force and acceleration ap...

مدل جبهه موج شوک قوی در مواد جامد بلوری با تنش تسلیم پایین

In this article, the stress-time or speed-time relation for a steady intense shock wave front and effective parameters on it in solid metals (except alkaline metals) were studied. First, the parameters relevant to the deformation of a pure material were identified and a relation between them was found. Then with simplifying assumptions, a stress change equation was obtained. Afterwards, the mod...
